WHY LEADERSHIP CHANGES THE PROBLEM
Everyone crosses the gap between one moment and the next. Leadership changes it in three specific ways, and the third is the trap.
You cross far more Edges, faster. Board call to one-on-one. Escalation to interview. Bad number to all-hands.
What you carry lands on more people. A bad hour can set the weather for decisions made all week.
The higher you go, the less likely people are to tell you what your carryover is costing. Silence is not data.
AN OLD VERDICT, A CURRENT OPERATING COST
Some of the most expensive leadership cargo did not come from the last meeting. It has been crossing Edges for years because successful outcomes kept making it look true.
A leader has told himself for years, “I work better under pressure.” He can point to real evidence: major events delivered, impossible deadlines met, last-minute decisions that improved the finished product.
Before a major event, he waits until the room is built so he can walk it as a guest. Then he changes it. The team tears down and resets. He walks it again and sees another improvement. They reset again.
The event opens on time and looks great. Nobody is held accountable for the churn because the leader knows he caused it. From his side of the Edge, the system appears to have worked.
From the team’s side, weeks of avoidable uncertainty became long hours, repeated work and stress they never needed to carry.
A good outcome does not automatically validate the process that produced it.
“I work better under pressure.” Maybe partly true. Still a conclusion, not a permanent law.
“Waiting creates my best work.” A personal conclusion becomes an operating practice.
“My team can handle it.” Their competence hides what the process costs them.
The event succeeds, and success is allowed to vote for the entire process instead of only the parts that actually earned it.
NOT A SUMMARY OF THE FREE MANUAL
The general Method tells you what an Edge is. This manual puts you at 10:58 with Priya waiting for a promotion conversation, inside a failure review with the person who warned you sitting silently in the room, and in the decisions where an old Rule is voting before the evidence does.

ONE OF THE EIGHT EDGES
You leave an 11% under-plan review without a good answer. At 11:00, Priya is waiting to discuss the promotion she asked about three weeks ago. The budget constraint belongs in the room. The state you are carrying does not automatically belong there with it.
“The practice is the checking, not the changing.”
Stopping, checking and deciding the thing you were already going to do is still a complete repetition.
Learn the Method, find the two or three Edges that cost you most, and use the tools in the next real week.
